Interesting Facts About the American Revolution

Fourth JulyWhat lead America to rebel against British rule? Not any one thing, though the Colonists did perceive many of King George’s taxes to be extremely unfair, so unjust in fact that some lost their homes and property. The British did the same thing in Ireland and other parts of the world.

Everything  in America was taxed,  and quite heavily, including strange things like windows. Textiles were taxed as well.  To protect British merchants, lots of things were imported from England including cloth.  The Colonists found a solution, however. You’ve heard of homespun? Some of the first homespun cloth was Hemp! Aye, cannabis. The colonists made clothes, sails, paper, string,  maps, bibles, etc from hemp. The founding fathers grew hemp on their plantations and according to one source I read,  the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution was written on Hemp paper . Benjamin Franklin started a hemp press to avoid the taxes on British paper. To read more about the American Colonists use of hemp go to:  http://www.truthabouthemp.org/History.html.Ben Franklin

Taxes were not the only thing the American Colonists were rebelling against, though that certainly was a big catalyst to the American Revolution. Consider the War of Regulation which most people have never heard of. North and South Carolina had a huge increase in population, much of it immigrant Irish and Scottish.  Taxes that were imposed on houses and property as a huge revenue for men whom the Colonists perceived as corrupt officials and sheriffs,  who did little more than line their pockets with gold, often conveniently loosing documents and records of taxes already paid thus seizing large tracts of land or property.  When the American Colonists rebelled, they found the judges to be just as corrupt. and their complaints fell on deaf ears. In retaliation and the hopes of gaining an audience for their grievances, a group of Colonists who called themselves ‘Regulators’ rebelled by destroying houses and property and small acts of violence against public officials. They simply wanted to be heard but the British saw this as a  act of treason against King and Country. Several men were hanged–it became unlawful to have an assembly, and taxes were increased once again to pay for the British army to wage war against the Regulators..  A good novel with scenes from the War of Regulation is ‘The Fiery Cross  by Diana Gabaldon.
